According to www.SanDiego.org, the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau, “over 45% of all [San Diego] visitors came to visit friends or relatives” in 2008 and about a third of all visitors were here on vacation. Additionally, according to the site, tourism is the third largest industry in San Diego, providing over 160,000 jobs for residents. San Diego is one of the top five places to visit in the US and in the top 10 places to visit for work.
The majority of visitors came from other cities within California, 36% coming from Southern California. Arizona led the rest of the states, accounting for 14% of all visitors. This also reflects the amount of “Zonies” who purchase summer homes in San Diego. I think about one third of my downtown clients are from Arizona and are looking for a second home, so they can escape the summer heat – they also love the convenience of highrise living(especially since they can just lock their doors and leave for months at time).
As San Diego grows, I think we’ll see a drastic change in property values. It’s definitely going to take some time, but once it starts, we’re all going to regret not having purchased more real estate. If you have any questions about San Diego real estate, I’d be happy to send you some info. And if you haven’t been downtown lately, come take a look…there’s a LOT going on.
