San Diego County Soccer Leagues

Kids soccer 4 I’ve been playing soccer since I was about 5 years old and I’ve never loved it more than I do now. Having grown up in the Los Angeles area (Redondo Beach to be exact), I can truely appreciate the San Diego soccer scene. Unlike my home town, San Diego has several adult leagues in different parts of the county and since it’s always 72 degrees and sunny, we get to play

year-round. Not only is soccer a great workout, I love getting to be competetive and beating other teams. At the age of 27, soccer’s been the most constant thing in my life, next to my family,eating, breathing and sleeping. Currently I play about 3–4 days a week and play on 4 different teams (mostly the same players, but in different leagues). My favorite league is the San Diego County Soccer League (SDCSL), but unfortunately, the season only goes from October through April or so.

The SDCSL is huge. It consists of seven different divisions and about 70 teams all together. The games are full field, 45 minute games with 11 players per side – all games are on Sundays and the home field is at Robb field in Ocean Beach. Since we live in San Diego, few games are rained out and we actually get lots of friends and fans who come watch our games and enjoy the weather. My team, FC PBR (Futbol Club, Pabst Blue Ribbon – yes, the beer), has been together for the last three seasons and we’ve done pretty well. We started in Second Division and won that, moved up to First Division and came in second and this last year we moved up to the Majors and went undefeated, taking first place.

The team consists of mostly twenty-somethings and we mostly know each other from school, work, or other soocer leagues and we even have a random player we got from Craigslist. My favorite thing about this team is how much fun we have, both on and off the field. We’re just a bunch of guys who all love soccer and we all love to party. In addition to this, those of us who aren’t in school have “real” jobs and are very motivated to succeed in life.

This coming season FC PBR looks to dominate the Super Majors division of the SDCSL. Hopefully we’ll do well. Soccer

Aside from the SDCSL, I play on a few indoor soccer teams. For the past year or so, I’ve been playing with my friends at Folsom indoor soccer facilty in North Park. This league is through the Lets Play Soccer organization and it’s a revolving 10 week season. Games are 44 minutes long (two 22 minute halves) and there can be up to six players on the field per team (including the goalie). I play on both a coed team and a men’s team, both called FC PBR. In coed, there are three guys and three girls.

Similar to the San Diego County Soccer League, Lets Play Soccer has several different divisions, but this league has games seven days a week. The field is similar to a hockey rink and has an artifical turf (for those of you who are familiar with these fields, it’s the kind with the little black rubber pellets). The best part of this league is that it never ends! As soon as week 10 finishes, the next season starts and you’re back there running again.

Another league I play in is at the Mission Valley YMCA on Friars Road. This is the newest of the leagues and it’s probably the most competitive. I only play on a men’s team here adn we’ve only had one game so far, but I know some teams and they’re good. We’ll see how we do there. But if all else fails, I can keep playing at UCSD in the intramural program.

Anyhow, that’s enough about soccer…I just wanted to talk about something aside from real estate for a change.
